As a lucky owner of a\ntimeshare arrangement, you may have a special coverage need. While insurance is\nreadily available for individually owned seasonal or secondary residences,\nbuildings, vacant land, or personal property; a timeshare arrangement may not\nbe handled by standard homeowner coverage forms. Coverage gaps may exist\nbecause typical timeshare arrangements involve:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • real property with multiple owners<\/li>
  • living units that are often furnished with personal property that may be jointly or severally owned<\/li>
  • living units which are occupied by several individuals or families who have control of all of the property during their time of occupancy<\/li>
  • special agreements or stipulations that govern the property’s use.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Here are some steps to\nprepare for a discussion of your coverage situation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1.\nCollect all of your timeshare-related paperwork, especially the contract that\ndescribes your ownership interest and obligations in the timeshare property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2.\nBe open to securing more than one policy to cover the jointly owned property,\nany personal property that’s located at the residence, the joint liability\nexposure and any special assessments or liability assumptions agreed to under\nany contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    3.\nBe reasonable about coordinating coverage needs among the timeshare’s other\nowners. Doing so will help make certain that all needs as met at the time\ncoverage is initially purchased and later, should coverage circumstances\nchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    4.\nBe flexible. Proper coverage may have to be provided by a specially modified\npersonal insurance contract or even some form of commercial coverage may be\nnecessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Since coverage needs can\nvary substantially from one arrangement to the next. It is important that you\ndiscuss your current coverage needs with a qualified agent. Don’t leave the\nmeeting with any unanswered questions. Ask that any points be fully explained\nto you in order to make sure that you’re protected adequately and affordably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
